How to Collect Chip Load, Feed, RPM, and Tool Inputs

Record effective teeth, cutter diameter, operation, engagement, source ranges, and machine limits before calculating CNC feed relationships.

Identify the exact cutter and operation

Record manufacturer, exact tool or part number, cutter type, effective cutting diameter, physical flutes, effective teeth, material, hardness, operation, radial engagement, axial engagement, coating, holder, coolant or air, and source revision.

Effective teeth means edges that participate per revolution. Do not substitute the physical flute count automatically.

Obtain a starting range from the source

Use current toolmaker information for the exact family, work material and operation. Record both the number and its units. A chart for another cutter, diameter, material, or router/mill context is not interchangeable.

Record machine limits separately

Capture maximum programmed feed and spindle RPM, then consider power, torque, acceleration, workholding, rigidity, runout and evacuation outside the simple equation. A calculated relationship does not prove the machine can execute it.

Check units before entry

Chip load is length per tooth, not length per revolution. Feed is length per minute. Cutter diameter is not radius. Preserve inch and metric quantities until the calculator converts them.

Keep the recorded values with the setup sheet. The CNC chip-load flagship remains out of the search index until its required machining review is signed off.
