How to Measure a Hopper for Volume

Identify inside top, outlet and vertical-height reference planes for a right circular or rectangular hopper calculation.

The simple hopper formulas require two parallel cross-sectional planes and their perpendicular separation. Measure internal dimensions at the wide top opening and smaller outlet opening.

Circular hopper

Measure inside top diameter and inside outlet diameter through the center. Use zero outlet diameter only when the modeled shape truly reaches a point. Record the vertical distance between the two opening planes—not the sloping wall length.

Rectangular transition

Measure inside length and width at both planes. The calculator assumes the profiles are centered, parallel and connected by straight sides whose dimensions change linearly. Confirm that each outlet dimension does not exceed its corresponding top dimension.
