How to Measure Lumber for a Board-Foot Tally
Measure thickness, width, length, and quantity consistently and understand rough, nominal, actual, and quarters thickness inputs.
Board-foot errors usually begin before the arithmetic: the dimensions were recorded on different bases. Decide whether the tally represents rough/nominal sizes or the board’s measured dimensions, then keep that basis consistent for every row.
A repeatable measuring procedure
- Identify the tally basis from the supplier or project notes.
- Measure thickness across the narrow edge and width across the broad face.
- Measure length end to end and record it in feet or convert it exactly.
- Group only pieces with identical dimensions; otherwise add another row.
- Record the number of pieces as a whole number.
- Enter the values in the board-foot calculator.
Rough, nominal, and actual
Rough or nominal values describe a commercial or process basis. Actual values describe the stock you measured. Neither is universally “correct” without knowing the job. A supplier tally may intentionally use a rough basis, while a shop inventory calculation may need actual physical volume. Never replace one with the other silently.
Quarters thickness
Hardwood thickness is often named in quarters of an inch: 4/4 is a one-inch tally thickness, 5/4 is 1.25 inches, and 8/4 is two inches. Surfacing removes material, so the finished thickness can be smaller. The quarters helper is a naming conversion, not a promise of finished size.
Irregular and tapered boards
The standard rectangular formula assumes consistent thickness and width. For a tapered or irregular board, a single maximum width can overstate volume and a minimum width can understate it. Divide the board into defensible sections or use the supplier’s documented tally method; do not treat a rough approximation as a grading decision.
Final check
Before using the answer for purchasing, confirm the measurement basis, the supplier’s increment, and whether the quoted price applies to measured or purchase-rounded board feet. The calculator deliberately shows those quantities separately.
