How to Measure Effective Rim Diameter (ERD)

Measure bicycle rim ERD with two known spokes and nipples, establish the spoke-end reference, repeat the reading, and avoid nominal-size errors.

Effective rim diameter is the diameter at which the spoke ends should sit in the nipples. It is not the tyre size, bead-seat diameter or outside diameter. Because ERD error passes strongly into spoke-length error, measuring the actual rim is one of the most valuable checks in a wheel build.

What you need

Choose and document the spoke-end reference

Seat each nipple the way it will be referenced in the build. A common goal is for the spoke end to reach the bottom of the nipple slot without protruding beyond the safe component limit. Washer stacks and different nipple-head designs change that reference. Do not add a hidden correction later: the ERD you enter should already represent the intended spoke-end circle.

Two-spoke measurement

  1. Install the two known spokes in exactly opposite rim holes.
  2. Install and seat their nipples at the chosen spoke-end reference.
  3. Pull the spokes straight toward one another without bending them across the rim well.
  4. Measure the inside gap between their ends.
  5. Add the two known spoke lengths and the measured gap:

ERD = spoke A length + spoke B length + inside gap

For example, two 200 mm measuring spokes with a 200 mm inside gap give 600 mm ERD.

Repeat across the rim

Move the pair to a perpendicular diameter and repeat the process. More readings help reveal an out-of-round rim or inconsistent seating. Record every reading and investigate a large spread; do not hide it by typing an unjustifiably precise average.

What to check before calculating

Record the checked ERD with its measurement tolerance so a spoke calculation can show how that interval affects raw left and right lengths. The spoke-length flagship remains out of the search index until its required wheelbuilder review is signed off.

Why manufacturer ERD can differ

Published dimensions can use a different nipple or spoke-end convention, describe another rim revision, or include rounding. A manufacturer value remains useful for a reasonableness check. When the actual parts are available, a carefully documented physical measurement resolves which convention the calculation is using.

Safety boundary

ERD measurement does not confirm rim condition, hub compatibility, allowed lacing, spoke tension or wheel safety. Inspect the components and follow their manufacturers’ instructions; have a qualified wheelbuilder review an unfamiliar or safety-critical build.
