This calculator converts pavement geometry and final compacted thickness into compacted volume. Add a project-specific compacted pavement density—or compacted-mixture bulk specific gravity—to calculate mass. Density, allowance, truck capacity, and price remain blank or user controlled, so an association example or local price is never presented as a universal answer.

How to use the asphalt calculator

  1. Choose rectangle, circle, or trapezoid and enter the plan dimensions.
  2. Enter the final compacted pavement thickness.
  3. If known, select direct compacted density or enter the compacted-mixture Gmb from your project records.
  4. Add only the order allowance your project team intends to evaluate.
  5. Optionally enter supplier truck capacity and material price per short ton.
  6. Review compacted volume, base mass, order mass, and every assumption before contacting the supplier.

What density should I enter?

Use the density of the applicable compacted mixture, with its units and source. FHWA material distinguishes compacted bulk specific gravity from theoretical maximum specific gravity and loose delivery state. If your record provides compacted-mixture Gmb, this calculator uses the documented relationship density (kg/m³) = Gmb × 1000. If neither is known, it reports volume and withholds tonnage.

Methodology and formulas

Rectangle area is length × width; circle area is π × (diameter/2)²; trapezoid area is (a+b) × perpendicular height ÷ 2. Then:

compacted volume = area × compacted thickness

base mass = compacted volume × compacted density

order mass = base mass × (1 + user allowance/100)

Truckloads use an upward ceiling only when you supply a truck-capacity figure. Cost uses the order mass and your material-only price. The calculator does not infer delivery, tax, minimum order, location, or live pricing.

Worked examples

Volume-only planning

A 10 × 20-foot rectangle at two compacted inches has 200 ft² of plan area. The tool can report its compacted cubic volume without guessing a mass.

Project-density calculation

For the same geometry, enter the compacted density from the mix-design or supplier documentation. The engine converts dimensions to SI, multiplies compacted volume by that value, and converts the mass to short tons for display.

Trapezoidal widening

Parallel sides of 10 and 20 feet with a 30-foot perpendicular height produce 450 ft². The depth is then applied to that area; it is not mixed into the plan-area equation.

Interpretation and limitations

The result is a material-planning estimate, not a pavement design, mix design, compaction specification, delivery-state conversion, supplier quote, or payload guarantee. Mixture, field compaction, lift design, yield, and job conditions matter. Confirm density, compacted depth, supplier units, capacity, and ordering policy with the responsible project professional and supplier.

Common input mistakes

  • Entering loose depth where the model requires final compacted thickness.
  • Using theoretical maximum density or binder density as compacted pavement density.
  • Assuming a regional example is a universal preset.
  • Rounding tons before applying allowance or truck capacity.
  • Treating material-only cost as a delivered quotation.

Troubleshooting results

  • Volume appears but tonnage does not: no applicable compacted density or Gmb has been entered. This is an intentional withheld result, not a failed calculation.
  • Tonnage is unexpectedly large: verify final compacted depth, dimensional units, and that the density describes compacted mixture rather than another material state.
  • Truckloads do not appear: enter a positive capacity supplied for the actual planning scenario; the tool does not assume a payload.
  • Cost does not match a quote: the result multiplies only your material price by calculated order mass. Delivery, tax, minimum orders, and other charges are outside the model.

Frequently asked questions

Why is tonnage missing?

The calculator intentionally withholds mass until you provide a compacted density or applicable compacted-mixture Gmb.

Is there a default asphalt density?

No. The safe release does not bundle the MAPA 110-pound association value or any universal density.

Can I use loose truck volume?

No. Loose material and compacted pavement are different states; this model does not infer a conversion.

Does the truckload result guarantee delivery capacity?

No. It is the ceiling of calculated order mass divided by the capacity you entered. Supplier and legal payload limits control.

Is the cost a quote?

No. It is user-entered material price times calculated order mass. It excludes every unentered charge.
