How to use the drywall mud calculator

Area methods
Room wall area is 2(length + width) × height − openings. The ceiling adds length × width. Sheet mode sums sheet width × sheet length × installed quantity; it does not infer scraps or future sheets from an unbuilt layout. Manual mode accepts an already calculated finished panel area.
Methodology
The engine converts every project area to square feet. Metric input uses the exact physical conversion before coverage is applied:
base gallons = area ft² ÷ 1000 × user coverage gal/1000 ft²
order gallons = base gallons × (1 + user allowance/100)
litres = gallons × 3.785411784
packages = ceil(order gallons ÷ user package size)
It does not store a second rounded litres-per-100-m² product constant, because that could make one physical project change merely by switching display units. Premixed volume is not converted to dry compound mass without a product-specific density source.
Worked examples
The following rates are hypothetical arithmetic examples, not product recommendations.
Manual 1,000 ft² example
If the rate you enter is 10 US gal per 1,000 ft², the base result for 1,000 ft² is 10 gallons. With 10% allowance, it becomes 11 gallons before package rounding.
12 × 10-foot room
Eight-foot walls total 352 ft² before openings. Including the 120-ft² ceiling produces 472 ft². The custom rate is applied only after that area is established.
Installed sheets
Thirty installed 4 × 8-foot sheets represent 960 ft² of panel area. A hypothetical rate of 10 gallons per 1,000 ft² would produce a 9.6-gallon base estimate.
Why actual use varies
Coverage is approximate. Finish level, joint and corner geometry, bead, texture, repairs, substrate, product formulation, tool method, application thickness, waste, and installer skill can change consumption. Product instructions and the responsible project specification control.
Common mistakes
- Entering package volume as the coverage rate.
- Using a value for a different product, task, or old revision.
- Applying both the printed imperial and rounded metric values as separate presets.
- Subtracting openings larger than the gross wall surface.
- Mixing premixed gallons and dry pounds without product-specific evidence.
- Treating package count as a finish-quality guarantee.
Troubleshooting results
- Area appears but material or packages do not: enter a positive custom coverage rate from the current product document and a positive package size. Neither value is assumed.
- Room area looks wrong: confirm whether the ceiling is included and that openings do not exceed gross wall area; room mode estimates surfaces, not joint length.
- Package count is unexpectedly high: recheck whether the source rate is gallons per 1,000 ft² and whether package size is entered in US gallons rather than as a package count.
- Imperial and metric scenarios differ: use one physical project and one source-rate basis. The engine converts through a canonical square-foot basis instead of treating rounded label values as separate formulas.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no product dropdown?
Named manufacturer coverage presets remain permission-gated. The complete safe calculator uses a custom value from the product sheet you possess.
Can I enter square metres?
Yes. The tool converts the physical area to the one canonical square-foot coverage basis and converts the final volume for metric display.
Should I average a published coverage range?
No. If your source gives a range, evaluate the endpoints as explicit scenarios rather than silently averaging them.
Does room area perfectly predict joint length?
No. It is a source-rate area model. Layout, seams, corners, bead, finish level, and task-specific rates can matter.
Is the number a guarantee?
No. It is a purchasing estimate driven by the exact custom rate and allowance you entered.
