It deliberately provides no built-in pool, guard, or code maximum and withholds numeric output when a life-safety context is selected.
How to use the picket calculator
- Select the application context before entering dimensions.
- For a general fence, measure each clear panel between its defined boundaries and add one row per panel.
- Enter actual picket face width.
- Choose a user maximum opening, fixed count with equal openings, fixed end gaps, or board-on-board overlap.
- Add separately counted gate-leaf pickets and an explicit order allowance.
- Review each panel’s result and center marks before transferring the layout.

Formula and method
For clear panel length L, picket width w, and count N, equal openings including both edge openings are:
gap = (L − Nw) / (N + 1)
To satisfy a user-entered maximum, the engine starts with ceil((L − maxGap)/(w + maxGap)), then verifies the exact result and moves upward if a floating-point boundary requires it. Center mark k is gap + w/2 + k(w+gap).
Fixed-end mode holds two end gaps and divides the remainder between N−1 intervals. Board-on-board mode uses count = ceil((L−overlap)/(width−overlap)) and verifies calculated coverage. Whole-order quantity applies the user allowance only after every panel is solved.
Worked examples
Count from a two-inch user maximum
For a 96-inch decorative panel and 3.5-inch pickets, the reviewed geometry returns 18 pickets and approximately 1.737-inch equal openings.
Fixed count
Seventeen 3.5-inch pickets in a 96-inch panel produce approximately 2.028-inch equal clearances under the symmetric opening model. The center marks mirror around the panel midpoint.
Board on board
A 96-inch run using 5.5-inch boards and one inch of overlap requires 22 boards under the stated model and produces 100 inches of arithmetic coverage.
Life-safety hard stop
Appearance spacing is not proof of pool-barrier, guard, child-safety, or local-code compliance. A spacing-only calculation does not address height, climbability, bottom clearance, gates, latches, loads, fasteners, posts, footings, materials, terrain, or amendments. When “pool barrier or guard” is selected, the calculator withholds the number and directs you to the local authority, project professional, and complete-system manufacturer.

It does not design framing, posts, footings, guards, gates, or other structural or life-safety components. Common mistakes
- Measuring the total fence line rather than each clear panel.
- Including post width in the clear-panel value.
- Using a nominal picket name instead of actual face width.
- Treating “between-only” language as if edge openings disappear.
- Entering overlap equal to or larger than board width.
- Treating an arithmetic warning as a code-compliance verdict.
Troubleshooting results
- No numeric layout is shown: pool-barrier and guard contexts deliberately withhold results; confirm the complete system with the authority, project professional, and manufacturer.
- A fixed count cannot fit: the selected pickets and required openings consume more than the clear panel length. Recheck panel boundaries, actual width, and the chosen mode.
- Count differs from a hand sketch: this model includes both edge openings in equal-opening mode. Confirm whether the sketch used the same gap policy.
- Board-on-board count looks unexpected: overlap must be smaller than actual face width, and the formula models idealized arithmetic coverage—not movement or privacy performance.
- Center marks seem offset: marks are measured from the same clear-panel boundary used for the panel length; do not include post width unless it is genuinely inside that boundary.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there two edge gaps?
The equal-opening model places one clearance at each panel edge and N−1 between pickets, for N+1 equal openings.
Can I enter a maximum gap supplied by my project?
For a general decorative context, yes; it remains a user input. The output is geometry, not legal approval.
Why is output withheld for pools and guards?
Those are life-safety systems with requirements beyond picket spacing, and adoption varies. A universal numeric preset or pass/fail label would be misleading.
Does board-on-board overlap guarantee privacy?
No. It reports idealized geometric coverage from the entered board width and overlap; movement, installation, and viewing angle are not modeled.
Are gate pickets included?
Only the fixed gate-leaf count you enter is added. Gate structure, hinges, latches, and safety are outside the tool.
